If you’re launching a Kickstarter campaign, the first thing on your to-do list – well, aside from coming up with a killer product concept – is making a Kickstarter video. The thing is, there are thousands of campaigns on Kickstarter, so having a video that REALLY stands out from the noise is often the deciding factor between getting your project funded, and going back to the drawing board.
Here are some tips to make the most out of your Kickstarter campaign video:
Don’t shoot it on your phone.
Viewers have much higher expectations now that video is the most popular form of content online. The quality of your video plays a big role in that crucial first impression. Opt for a DSLR at the very least (borrow one if you have to!) and film it in a well-lit location. But hire a professional if you can, especially if you’re asking for thousands of dollars’ worth of funding. If you’re asking for a few hundred, no one will expect you to have a top of the line video. But if you’re asking for thousands – the quality of your video should be in line with your funders’ expectations.
Make sure they can hear you!
An external microphone is better than on-camera audio recording, but if that isn’t an option, do everything you can to make sure the sound in your video is crisp and clear. If you’re recording a voiceover, create a makeshift audio booth in a closet by putting blankets up on the walls to block out any noises or bounce.
Study successful campaign videos.
Take a look at Kickstarter projects that have been successfully funded. Every product is unique and you should never copy the style of someone else’s video, but paying attention to what is working and what isn’t will give you an advantage when it comes to making your own.
Keep your Kickstarter video short.
You have about ten seconds to make a really good first impression in a video. Find a way to hook your viewers early and make them want to keep watching. Also, keep your Kickstarter video at 2-3 minutes max, but if you can do it in less – you should! Attention spans are really short these days.
Start with good content.
Not every video needs to be funny, so unless your product or your personality honestly lends itself to humor – don’t force it! There are plenty of other ways to get attention. Appeal to your viewers’ emotions, be inspirational, be fun and optimistic if it’s appropriate, and definitely show (don’t just tell) your story.
